Birds Barbershop

Challenge
____

When the founders of Birds Barbershop conceived Austin’s first rock and roll barbershop, they knew they’d be butting up against industry giants. As consumers, we’ve grown numb to one of two options for our cut and color: a pricey salon or a no frills experience from the likes of Supercuts. Birds was attempting to carve out a new mid-tier offering: amped up styling without the high prices.

As a “Heretical Challenger,” Birds is a brand that redefines perspective by looking over the horizon and bringing people what they didn’t know they needed. We worked with Birds to structure an ethos – a neighborhood barbershop where you can sip a Shiner and get your split ends trimmed while listening to Pavement or Johnny Cash. The graphic system created by Door Number 3 reflected the spirit of a born legend and has allowed Birds to go forth and create an authentic, sustainable story – online and offline.

Birds is a thriving, iconic Austin brand with eight locations and a national fan base. It has been recognized as a “Best Salon” by Elle and named one of “America’s Best Barbershops” by Maxim. Birds recently spread its wings by expanding into Houston.

We sat down with Door Number 3 when Birds was just an idea: take the chore out of getting a quality haircut. They took our passion for music, fashion, beer and Austin fun and made it all fit cohesively into a smart package. We’ve been able to carve a new category that is an alternative to discount giants and high-dollar salons, develop a fanbase beyond our hometown and grow by a shop a year every year since we first opened. If you’re up against Goliaths, talk to these guys. Their strategy is unparalleled, but the cherry on top is that it all comes from a storyteller’s heart. As we’ve learned from Door Number 3, behind every great brand is a great story.
